I discussed the mechanisms of oxidative stress & damage in a previous post but how does that effect cardiovascular disease (CVD)?? Atherosclerosis is a buildup of plaque in the walls of arteries that, over time, can build up enough that it closes in on the opening of the artery and blood can no longer flow through in sufficient quantities to supply the tissues. This results in tissue death in the area supplied by the artery. Common examples are heart attacks & ischemic strokes. Read more

I remember the first time I saw the price of the Eirofit weightloss system. I was a little concerned about the cost. I felt that it was a little bit expensive at $199 for the month. Granted, that does include 2 meal replacement shakes per day (EiroLean) and the thermogenic pills (EiroBurn) but I still felt that it was a little pricey. But then I started doing the math. My fears were laid to rest. Read more

You may have been wanting to improve your health and fitness or lose weight and stumbled across the “paleo diet.” So what, exactly, is the paleo diet? Good question and I hope I can give you a good introductory overview in a few hundred words.
Let me start by saying that the scientific evidence supporting this diet for health and weightloss is substantial. This is NOT some fad diet that was dreamed up as a gimmick to sell a book. From what I have been able to ascertain, the rational behind this method of nutrition is very sound. Read more

If you looked at the ETS then you know that oxygen is essential for adequate energy production. It accepts the electrons generated in glycolysis and Kreb’s. However, oxygen can also be detrimental.
Free radicals are produced from exposure to one of several factors. Inflammation, radiation (i.e. x-rays), aging, high pO2, smog (such as ozone or NO2), re-perfusion injury, and chemicals and drugs can all produce free radicals. Additionally, free radicals are produced as a part of normal metabolism.
For roughly every 26 molecules of oxygen reduced in the ETS, one free radical is produced. So what is a free radical? A free radical is an unstable molecule that has an “extra” electron. The molecule is eager to donate its electron to any molecule that will accept it. The accepting molecules can be any number of molecules such as those that compose cell membranes. These extra electrons are damaging to the accepting substances.
